Abstract

The article analyzes the current state of foreign language (FL) education in secondary education institutions and FL instruction in universities within the framework of the Ukrainian State Standard of Basic Secondary Education [2] and the Professional Standard [3]. The key challenges faced by FL teachers and pre-service educators are highlighted, and practical recommendations for improving the educational process are provided.

The purpose of the article is to identify current problems in FL teaching / educating, and to outline promising pathways for improving FL teaching methodology in hard times.

The methodological basis of the research is grounded in the principles of scientific consistency, systematicity, and practical orientation. The article employs theoretical methods, including analysis and synthesis of pedagogical literature related to foreign language teaching methodology. Among empirical methods, observations of the educational process and the implementation of research findings during teaching practice in senior grades of school in Mykolaiv were utilized.

The scientific novelty of the article is in its comprehensive approach to analyzing the current state of foreign language teaching and pre-service teachers education across two distinct educational environments – secondary schools and universities – emphasizing the identification of effective practices adaptable at both levels. For the first time, the study focuses on summarizing the key challenges encountered by educators in the context of war, digitalization, hybrid learning models, and evolving educational standards. The article presents an overview of ICT tools, approaches, and methodologies, and validates the relevance of cross-level integration of successful pedagogical solutions.

Conclusions: Improving the methodology of FL teaching and educating requires the systematic integration of ICT, project-based approaches utilizing, and enhancement of the methodological pre-service teachers education. This will ensure the preparation of competitive pre-service teachers who can use foreign languages in challenging circumstances. The recommendations proposed in the article may be useful for teachers and pre-service teachers educators working in both secondary schools and universities.
