The purpose of this article is to characterize the activities of the Chernihiv Colehium (1700–1786) as part of Ukraine's educational space through the prism of its European orientation.
Methodology. The use of hermeneutic and narrative approaches provided a reasoned account of the activities of the Chernihiv Colehium in the 18th century as a holistic pedagogical process. A number of general scientific methods were used to write the article: analysis, synthesis, comparison and generalisation.
Scientific novelty. The article characterises the activities of the Chernihiv Colehium in the 18th century in the context of the development of education in Ukraine during that period. The authors highlight European traditions in Ukrainian education and examine the peculiarities of the organisation of the educational process at the Chernihiv Colehium through the prism of European educational practices.
Conclusions. Thus, in the 18th century, Chernihiv Colehium, like other collegiums, was, as L. Posokhova aptly put it, at the ‘crossroads of cultures, traditions, and eras.’ The synergy of influences determined the two-vector development of pedagogical principles in Ukrainian education in general and in the activities of Chernihiv Colehium in particular. The functioning of the Chernihiv Colehium as a prominent component of the Ukrainian educational space is characterised by the presence of features of traditional national culture and European scientific thought and pedagogical practice. This was evident in the didactic and educational approaches to the organisation of the educational process, as well as in the rules and norms of life for students and teachers, and contributed to the development of higher education in Ukraine based on the early modern European model.
The development of Ukrainian education in the European educational space and the links between Ukrainian and European education also took place in other historical periods. They varied in intensity and depended on the specifics of Ukraine's political and social development.
Prospects for further research may be related to the identification of factual materials and the implementation of analytical or generalising studies on the European orientation of the Chernihiv Colehium and educational institutions that succeeded it in different historical periods.
