Abstract

The purpose of the article is to describe the key concepts and the nature of the process of shaping civic identity among students.

Research methodology. The study involved a theoretical analysis of the issue of the formation of students’ civic identity. The study employed methodological approaches such as the systemic, hermeneutic, psychological and sociocultural approaches. General scientific research methods – analysis, synthesis, comparison and generalisation – were utilised, providing a basis for a comprehensive examination of various scientific approaches to the formation of civic identity among students.

Scientific novelty. This article summarises academic approaches to explaining the concept of ‘civic identity’, proposes the author’s own definition of the term, and describes the nature of the process by which civic identity is formed among students.

Conclusions. Thus, the formation of civic identity among students is a process whereby students come to see themselves as part of the Ukrainian nation and civil society, based on shared values, historical memory and active participation in the life of the state. In the current context, this process serves as a tool for strengthening social stability and Ukraine’s European integration. The main areas of focus in the formation of civic identity are: the development of personal values (fostering respect for human rights, democracy, freedom and responsibility); the cultivation of historical memory (understanding historical truth, culture, language and traditions); engaging students in community activities and volunteering; creating a supportive educational environment that prioritises civic education and the use of modern teaching and learning technologies.
