Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify the sources of precedent in the Belarusian mass media discourse and describe the specifics of its implementation in this kind of text.

Methodology. The methodological basis of this study is the theory of precedence and intertextuality by Y. Karaulov, Y. Prokhorov, D. Gudkov, V. Krasnykh, Y. Kristeva, and R. Bart.

Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the research consists in establishing the peculiarities of the functioning of precedent phenomena used in the titles and texts of republican and regional publications of Belarus, as well as in determining the spheres-sources of precedent in the Belarusian mass media discourse. At the same time, the studied units are considered in the unity and totality of both their structure and semantics, and their role in the mass media text.

Conclusions. The research shows that the most represented type of precedent phenomena in the Belarusian press is a precedent statement. The most significant sphere-source of precedent is «Art», and the least significant sphere-source of precedent is «Science», which indicates the corresponding value orientations implemented in the mass media discourse of Belarus. These trends manifest themselves both in the national and regional newspapers.
