USING THE METHOD OF STORYTELLING IN TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to reveal the possibilities of using the method of storytelling in online and offline formats in the process of teaching foreign languages to university students. The term ‘storytelling’ refers to a modern pedagogical technology, based on the discussion or creating a story, used to develop communication skills and enhance the cognitive activity of students. In the conditions of higher school pedagogical storytelling can be used in teaching the disciplines of both humanitarian and special cycles. In the course of teaching foreign languages, it solves such pedagogical tasks as transferring information, increasing the motivation of students, developing information and communication competencies, upbringing moral values.

Methodology. Oral, written and digital storytelling are characterized in the article. The specifics of using classical and active storytelling in teaching foreign languages are described. The potential of digital storytelling as a form in which storytelling is complemented by a visual series and which can be used in both full-time and distance learning, is revealed. Examples of stories that were used during foreign language classes at a technical university are given. The stages of work with stories are defined: preparatory, basic and reflexive. Various techniques for working with texts in online and offline formats are described.

The scientific novelty of the study is revealing the potential of storytelling in developing the student's personality. It is shown how stories promote the ability to make moral choices, enrich vocabulary, and develop speech skills.

Conclusion. Using the method of storytelling in foreign language classes promotes the development of universal learning skills: to think creatively and critically, to work with information using digital technologies, to effectively communicate orally and in writing, to organize cooperation, to create projects.
