Abstract

The purpose of the study is to analyse in detail how the historical and cultural transformations of the yokai myths reflect the unique Japanese worldview and the country's inherent adaptation of traditions to modernity, and to consider the role of the relevant myths in the formation of ethno-cultural identity.

Methodology. The methodological basis of this study is cultural hermeneutics. The research methods include the analysis of mythological texts, cultural and historical context, and contemporary interpretations of myths in media and art. The use of an interdisciplinary approach allows for a comprehensive assessment of the impact of the yokai on Japanese society and culture.

Scientific novelty. The article is the first to analyse the myths about yokai as a means of transmitting cultural values and adapting the new generation to modern social challenges. Their importance in the formation and reflection of the Japanese worldview is revealed. The article introduces significant empirical material concerning the images of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture into the circulation of Ukrainian scientific thought and provides its understanding in ethical and pedagogical aspects.

Conclusions. Myths about yokai are not only a significant component of the cultural heritage of the Japanese, but also an active factor in the process of social change, which allows Japanese society to express and reflect on its beliefs, fears and ideals. The study of yokai opens up new perspectives for understanding the uniqueness of Japanese culture in its awareness of the interaction between the natural and spiritual worlds, and in its ability to adapt to the challenges of modernity and innovate in various spheres of cultural and social life. Due to the diversity of specific mythological representations and their diverse influences on contemporary culture, including far beyond Japan, the topic has significant potential for further study.
