Abstract

The purpose of the article is to find out the peculiarities of the leading positions in the European aesthetic discourse of the 20th to the beginning of the 21st century regarding the functional analysis of dramatic works; to offer educational materials and recommendations for their study at higher education institutions.

Methodology. The research foundation of the proposed topic is formed by a series of methodological approaches, including, in particular, semiotic and post-structuralist approaches, fundamental principles of receptive aesthetics and contemporary theater studies.

An analysis of the fundamental works of European aestheticians of the 20th to the early 21st century, such as Roland Barthes, Umberto Eco, Hans Robert Jauss, Wolfgang Iser, as well as Polish theater scholars Tadeusz Kornhauser-Kovzan and Slawomir Świontek, was conducted to identify the aesthetic-functional aspect in dramatic works. The main tendencies in defining the aesthetic value of this literary genre in socio-cultural, linguistic, and pedagogical contexts were generalized.

Scientific novelty. For the first time, a comprehensive examination of the seminal sources of the modern era has been undertaken, representing the European philosophical perspective on the functioning of dramatic works as bearers of aesthetic value. The developed materials can be used in the professional training of future teachers of literature, as well as cultural experts.

Conclusions. It has been determined that the aesthetic and functional approach to studying a dramatic artistic work should be considered as a complex methodological problem of combining aesthetic and functional aspects of analysis, determining the aesthetic value of the text against the backdrop of a wide range of evaluations – from subjective to socio-cultural, corresponding contexts, as well as the absence of a universal approach.
