Abstract

The purpose of the article. The purpose of the article is to update the importance of balanced and informed teaching of the history of the Holocaust in institutions of higher education, which will contribute to preserving the memory of the fate of Ukrainian Jewry, overcoming imperial and Soviet stereotypes, highlighting the relevance of continuing to study various aspects of the Holocaust topic in higher education as a guarantee of peace and democracy, analysis of the experience of studying this topic at the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine. Today, in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war, attention to this topic is extremely relevant, because it is necessary to constantly overcome propaganda, one of the narratives of which is that Ukrainians are anti-Semites and Nazis. Instead, Ukrainians today realize that the tragedy of the Holocaust is not a purely Jewish story. Declared and legally protected human rights are a necessity for the functioning of universal human values, the violation of which can lead to a terrible tragedy for the entire nation.

Methodology. To realize the goal, such theoretical methods as analysis, synthesis, generalization, as well as the principles of scientificity, accessibility and integrity were used.

Scientific novelty. It consists in summarizing information about when, why and how the history of the Holocaust tragedy began to be studied in Ukrainian education, what foreign and domestic political processes influenced it, and outlining the prospects for studying the history of the Holocaust in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Also, the novelty consists in the presentation of the experience of cooperation of the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine with international organizations, project activities, involvement of higher education students in scientific and research work, practices of implementing the acquired experience of teaching the history of the Holocaust during classes in humanitarian, social, legal, and philological disciplines.

Conclusion. The Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine actively participates in studying the history of the Holocaust tragedy and preserving its memory. The events held at the academy actualize the importance of remembering the significant socio-economic contribution and unique cultural influences of the Jewish population on the socio-cultural environments of the city and region, emphasizing that Jewish history is part of our common history.
