THE IDEA OF «EDUCATIONAL REGENERATIONISM» IN THE SPANISH PERIODICAL «MODERN SCHOOL» (1899–1904)

Abstract

The journal «Modern School» was one of the leading pedagogical periodicals in Spain in the years 1891–1934. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, he became a real harbinger of the idea of «educational regenerationism».

The purpose of the work involves studying the content of the Spanish periodical «Modern School» and analyzing the reflection of the idea of «educational regenerationism» in the publications of Spanish teachers in 1899–1904.

Methodology. In the course of researching the content of the Spanish periodical «Modern School», which was published at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, general scientific methodological approaches were used – systemic, structural-functional, problematic, as well as specific scientific approaches: paradigmatic-pedagogical, comparative-pedagogical, problem-historical, hermeneutic. The main research methods were the pedagogical-retrospective, comparative-comparative, hermeneutics method.

Scientific novelty. The article shows that the idea of «educational regenerationism» was key in the Spanish periodical «Modern School» in 1899–1904.

Conclusions. One of the leading pedagogical periodicals in the Kingdom of Spain – the journal «Modern School» – in the late 1890s and early 1900s became a defender and spreader of the idea of «educational regenerationism». Spanish teachers proved that, first of all, developing the educational sphere in the country, building the national education system, overcoming the mass illiteracy of the population, the state will be able to embark on the path of revival, renewal and elevation.
