Abstract

In the Spanish pedagogical press at the beginning of the 20th century, the issues of social education and social pedagogy came to the fore. Numerous publications on the topic of social education in Spanish periodicals in the 1900–1910s indicated a significantly increased interest in the pressing issues of public education reform in Spain.

The purpose of the work involves studying the issues of pedagogical periodicals in Spain in the 1900–1910s and finding out how ideas regarding social education and social pedagogy were reflected in these publications.

Methodology. In the process of studying the content of the Spanish pedagogical press at the beginning of the 20th century, such specific scientific approaches as comparative-pedagogical, paradigmatic-pedagogical, problem-historical, hermeneutic were used. The main methods of research were pedagogical-retrospective, comparative, method of hermeneutics.

Scientific novelty. The article presents a classification of publications on social education in the Spanish pedagogical press of the 1900–1910s; the importance of periodicals in Spain at the beginning of the 20th century in the dissemination of socio-pedagogical ideas is substantiated.

Conclusions. The press in the Kingdom of Spain at the beginning of the 20th century opened up a large space for intellectuals to influence the masses. The actualization of socio-pedagogical ideas disseminated in Spanish periodicals during the 1900–1910s was due primarily to the need to overcome the mass illiteracy of the population and the Kingdom's backwardness from developed European countries. The ideas of Spanish educators regarding social education and social pedagogy, which were reflected in the pedagogical press at the beginning of the 20th century, envisaged a large-scale reform of public education in the country and the achievement of universal public education.
