Abstract

The purpose of the article is to examine historical and pedagogical approaches to characterizing educational space and the possibilities of its expansion for organizing the education, upbringing and development of children and youth.
Methodology. We used problematic, systemic and synergistic approaches in the research. The hermeneutic and narrative approaches were used to generate objective meanings for the expansion of the educational space in the historical and pedagogical dimension. We used general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, and generalization in the research.
Scientific novelty. The article highlights the historical and pedagogical experience of educational practices related to the organization of education of children and youth outside of school classrooms. This concerns the conduct of educational classes in nature and in the relevant social environment (in out-of-school educational institutions, cultural institutions, production centers) and the use of the potential of museum pedagogy. The following practices were used in the educational systems of different countries in different historical periods.
Conclusions. Expanding the educational space in the narrow sense means going beyond the classroom during classes, studying in a workshop, museum, or outdoors. In the broader sense, it means attracting a variety of public resources to achieve the goals of education and provide conditions for the education, upbringing, development and socialization of children and youth. Expanding the educational space is in line with modern approaches to organizing interactive learning on the basis of child-centeredness or human-centeredness. At the same time, the traditions of expanding the educational space have deep historical and pedagogical roots: from the education of the ancient world to the innovative pedagogical system of the prominent Ukrainian educator V. Sukhomlynskyi.
