Problem. The purpose of the study is to analyse the informative capabilities of the statistical results of general population censuses as a historical source for studying ethno-social and ethno-cultural processes, to determine the uniqueness of population census data as a basic statistical source for characterising relevant changes in the structure of society.
Research methodology. The methodological basis of the article is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, multifactoriality and systematicity. According to the principle of historicism, the main trends in the formation of the programmatic foundations of population censuses are studied, their interrelationships with international methodological models are established. The principle of objectivity helps to identify the possibilities of statistical results of population censuses as a comprehensive source for studying certain aspects of socio-cultural changes. In accordance with the principle of multifactoriality, the degree of influence of objective and subjective reasons on the prioritisation of census programme issues related to socio-cultural components in different historical periods is determined. The application of the principle of systematicity makes it possible to determine the possibility of considering the socio-cultural characteristics of the population in their integrity.
The implementation of these principles was carried out with the help of both general scientific (analysis and synthesis) and historical (problematic-chronological, historical-comparative and retrospective) research methods.
Particular attention is paid to the characterisation of the methodological foundations of population censuses in the context of the research topic. Emphasis is placed on the importance of combining the substantive analysis of statistical data from published census publications and archival census data.
Scientific novelty. The novelty of the scientific research includes the analysis of the final data of the All-Union population censuses of 1959-1989 and the All-Ukrainian population census of 2001 in combination with previously unknown to a wide range of scholars archival materials as sources for a comprehensive study of socio-cultural processes in Ukrainian society of the period in question. At the same time, an important feature of the study is the scrupulous attention paid to the methodology of the programme documents of the general population censuses and its connection with international census practices.
In conclusion, it should be noted that a comprehensive and reliable scientific understanding of ethno-cultural and socio-cultural processes is possible only if large-scale demographic surveys such as general population censuses are involved in the substantive analysis of statistical data. The combination of statistical characteristics of socio-cultural changes in society with the study of archival information on ethno-cultural and socio-cultural state policy at different historical stages is aimed at the full realisation of the research tasks set out in the article.
