Abstract

The purpose of the article is to theoretically analyse the process of legal culture formation of student youth, its legal education and awareness at the key stages of development of the Ukrainian statehood.

Methodology. The methodological basis of the article is theoretical analysis and synthesis of scientific literature, retrospective and critical analysis of the theoretical work of Ukrainian scholars, educational and cultural figures on solving problems related to the formation of legal culture of young people.

The scientific novelty of the results obtained lies in the comprehensive substantiation and analysis of the main stages of formation of the student youth legal culture, which can be traced back to different periods of Ukrainian history.

Conclusions. Legal culture as a social phenomenon and as a legal category has been studied in the context of various social sciences, but its existence was associated with other social realities. The modern legal culture of young people is at a transitional stage, so for its further development it requires scientific and theoretical understanding of the essence and development of value and legal orientations.

Since the times of Kyivan Rus', Ukraine has had certain historical traditions of legal culture and legal education. In the XIV – XVI centuries, the development of legal education in Ukraine was driven by the struggle of the Ukrainian people for independence and preservation of cultural autonomy. For this reason, educational and religious institutions, in particular, fraternal schools, were the centres of formation and dissemination of legal culture.

Particular importance was attached to the formation of the legal culture of young people in the Soviet era. Great importance was attached to promoting the fight against the institution of private property and labour, primarily in favour of the state.

As a result, it was assumed that a stable moral attitude of the population to Soviet legal norms should gradually develop. Also, ideological and political education, which was a component of communist ideology, played an important role.

The historical traditions of legal education in Ukraine and key aspects of the formation of legal culture of young people were conditioned by the development of legal education and legal awareness of Ukrainians, which was associated with the moral, religious and patriotic education of Ukrainians. During transitional periods of social development, issues related to the formation of youth legal culture require special attention. After all, young people are the driving force behind the formation of a democratic state and should have a high level of professional legal awareness and legal culture.
