Abstract

It has been shown that pedagogical and educational ideas of prominent Ukrainian figures of different historical periods need to be studied in order to implement them in the modern educational space.

The purpose of the article is to identify I. Franko’s contribution to the development of Ukrainian education and culture on the basis of the analysis of his life path, views and creative work.

The methodology of our research is based on the theory of the scientific knowledge of the objective phenomena interaction and their interdependence, the use of research methods: general scientific methods, historical-pedagogical methods, research-bibliographic methods.

The novelty of the research is to study the contribution of Ivan Franko in the development of Ukrainian education and culture. Scientist’s progressive ideas concerning the necessity for establishing state independence in the Ukrainian lands and development of education have been outlined. It has been emphasized that he paid great attention to the education and upbringing of the younger generation, had his own vision of the purpose of upbringing and the upbringing ideal, clearly defined the purpose and objectives of national education, which he entrusted to the national school and Ukrainian family (especially to the mother). Special attention has been also paid to his views on increasing the role of women in social processes.

Conclusions. The analysis of Ivan Ya. Franko’s life path, views (in particular, pedagogical), creative work allows us to say about his remarkable contribution to the development of Ukrainian education and culture. The ideas of our outstanding compatriot regarding Ukrainian independence and self-government, the goals and objectives of national education, the teacher’s personality and his / her importance in shaping the younger generation, the role of parents in this process, women’s place in social processes, etc. remain extremely relevant in modern independent Ukraine. The multifaceted work of the great scientist, first of all his pedagogical views, require more thorough study, the results of which will be useful in the context of reforming the education of modern Ukraine.
