Abstract

The purpose of the article is to examine the key prerequisites and spiritual and political circumstances of the formation of the educational space in the second half of the seventeenth century in the territory of Chernihiv-Sivershchyna, the processes that led to the foundation of a new type of spiritual educational institution – the Chernihiv Collegium; to analyse the contribution of Lazar Baranovych to the development of the cultural and educational environment of the future collegium.

Methodology. Given the specifics of the subject and objectives of the study, the work uses elements of descriptive, cultural, historical and biographical methods of analysis. In addition, the study uses chronological and systematic, problem-solving and search analysis of literary sources to reproduce the sequence and summarise the main components of the educational space of the Chernihiv Collegium.

The scientific novelty of the article lies in the absence of a comprehensive study of the impact of the cultural and educational activities of Archbishop Lazar Baranovych of Chernihiv on the formation of the educational space of the Chernihiv Collegium. This issue is represented by several studies on the history of the Chernihiv Collegium and the contribution of the Chernihiv hierarch to this process, and does not address the issue comprehensively.

Conclusions. The opening of the Chernihiv Collegium, an educational institution that quickly became a centre of education of national importance during the Hetmanate, was closely linked to the activities of Archbishop Lazar Baranovych. His creation of a printing house and Latin school, the separation of the Chernihiv Archdiocese into a separate church hierarchical unit contributed to the formation of a new type of educational and cultural space and the creation of the educational space of the Chernihiv Collegium. It should be noted that the Chernihiv Collegium was founded on the initiative of the Chernihiv archbishops at a time when the Hetmanate still had some autonomy in the church sphere. That is why the history of the Chernihiv Collegium illustrates the relative independence of Ukrainian hierarchs in making important decisions. For many political reasons, Lazar Baranovych was not able to personally witness the creation of an educational institution in Chernihiv, but through his consistent cultural and political activity he laid the foundations of a powerful educational space – the centre of education and culture in the region.
