The relevance of the article is determined by the scientific and technical revolution, which caused a sharp increase in the volume of information. This information must be understood, assimilated, processed in the mind, and used in practice. With the fast pace of time, a large amount of information, ideas, theories, and technologies quickly change, transform, and become obsolete. In this regard, the amount of knowledge acquired during education becomes insufficient already after 3-5 years of professional activity. Nowadays, knowledge is only a potential that a specialist should possess – the main thing is the effectiveness of the specialist's activity in specific conditions – therefore, one of the directions of modernization of education is the introduction and implementation of the competence approach in education. The competence approach is focused on the final result of the educational process and is aimed at forming the readiness of the graduate to effectively use internal resources (knowledge, skills, values, psychological features) and external resources (information, human, material) to achieve the set goal.
The purpose of the study is to consider the formation of professional competence, which should be carried out in the process of training a specialist in physical education and sports at a higher educational institution from the standpoint of a modern practical approach.
Scientific novelty. It aims at substantiating the expediency of using the competence approach in the professional training of future physical education teachers; development of the theoretical justification of the concept of «professional competence formation»; clarification of the component composition of the professional competence of specialists in physical education and sports; determining the levels and indicators of the physical education teachers’ professional competence formation.
Conclusions: Overall, solving the task of forming the professional competence of future specialists in physical education is possible through purposeful pedagogical management of the educational process optimization, a fundamental change in the methodology of obtaining new knowledge and becoming a future specialist in physical education and sports based on the use of innovative educational technologies. The scientific and methodical provision of professional training does not keep up with the rapid development of information technologies in physical education and sports and education, which requires the modernization of professional training of specialists in physical education and sports. It requires further research to identify the factors and conditions for the formation of professional competence of physical education and sports specialists by means of various technologies, based on the introduction of distance learning on the basis of the latest information technologies into the professional education of physical education teachers.
