Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyse the development of ideas about the civic identity of children and young people in the history of Ukrainian pedagogy.

Research methodology. A biographical approach was used in the research, which made it possible to examine the development of ideas about the formation of civic identity through the prism of the views of well-known Ukrainian pedagogues. The use of methods of analysis, synthesis, and generalisation ensured the processing of pedagogical works, the writing of the article, and the formulation of logical conclusions.

Scientific novelty. The article analyses the ideas of Ukrainian pedagogues H. Vaschenko, M. Hrushevsky, S. Rusova, V. Sukhomlynsky and Y. Chepiga on the civic identity of children and youth.

Conclusions.  Thus, despite the fact that the concept of ‘civic identity’ did not exist in Ukrainian public and pedagogical discourse until the end of the 20th century the development of Ukrainian national consciousness in the 19th century contributed to the emergence of pedagogical ideas and activities that, in the modern sense, can be attributed to the formation of civic identity. First and foremost, this concerns the national and patriotic education of children and young people. In the history of Ukrainian pedagogy ideas about the civic identity of young people embodied the dream of many Ukrainians to form conscious citizens of an independent state who know their history, culture and language. V. Sukhomlynsky's ideas about the ‘birth of a citizen’ occupy a special place in the history of Ukrainian pedagogy in the 20th century.

We consider the in-depth study of the works of individual (little-known and well-known) educators devoted to this problem and the identification of ideas relevant to contemporary education in them to be promising areas of historical and pedagogical research related to the civic identity of the individual. The study of the means of forming the civic identity of the younger generation used in the history of Ukrainian education also deserves attention.
