MEDIA LITERACY IN THE HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM

Abstract

«The concept on the introduction of media literacy in Ukraine» which was agreed by the resolution of the Presidium of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine in May 2010, helped to create an effective system of media education.

Both domestic and foreign scientists implement projects to increase media awareness among the population. With the support of the Ukrainian Press Academy and IREX Ukraine, many trainings and seminars have been implemented for both journalists and educators.

Lecturers, especially of pedagogical higher education institutions (HEI), are trained to make adjustments to the pedagogical process. To educate and teach students to be media aware, be able to distinguish facts from judgments, manipulative actions of the media and use only proven information in their activities. Bypass information «garbage», protect against potentially harmful information, taking into consideration direct and hidden influences; have the ability for media creativity for competent and healthy expression.

The purpose of the article – to expose the concepts of «media education», «media literacy» and analyze media literacy as an important factor in the formation of media competence in the higher education system.

Methodology. Systematization and theoretical understanding of scientific publications, analysis of scientific and educational literature, Internet sources, disclosure of basic definitions of the problem under investigation, generalization and clarification of the ideas of scientists.

Scientific novelty. It is to improve the role of social networks as the most characteristic factor, which influences the formation of optimal conditions for the development and use of media education in higher education institutions.

Conclusions. Importance of introducing media literacy in the HEI is such a factor as a promising and active population – students. Due to social interaction, constant online life, readiness for self-development and self-education, cooperation with the media, content creation, search and use of information, use of mobile applications, self-fulfillment through social networks requires media literacy and awareness in the realities of today. That is why the inclusion of such course as Media Literacy in the higher education system will allow to form necessary competences, ensure practical application of the acquired knowledge, skills and abilities among students of pedagogical higher education institutions.
